On October 3, 1962, NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra’s personal Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA in space during his Mercury Sigma 7 mission. The CK 2998 was produced from 1959 to 1962.
The new FOiS pays homage to the original with a modern take on the second-generation Speedmaster style. The dial has the same logo and markings as the original and boasts a new grey-blue CVD coating, a nod to the distinctive color of some CK 2998 watches produced in the 1960s. The hands and markers are filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, which tries to approximate the effect of patina.
The stainless steel case measures 39.7mm x 13.4mm, has a 48mm lug-to-lug distance, a 19mm lug width, and is 50 m water resistant. The watch features a sapphire crystal with a vintage Hesalite look and a “Dot Over Ninety” aluminum bezel insert.
Behind a commemorative caseback that says “The First Omega In Space” engraved on the top and “October 3, 1962” on the bottom, the watch houses the Calibre 3861, a Master Chronometer movement with a 50-hour power reserve and Co-Axial escapement found in the other Speedmaster Professional models.
The watch is available with a steel flat link bracelet with an easy-adjust system or a leather strap.
